 The Ghosts of America's Past...

How are you celebrating this Fourth of July? As for me, as the anticipation of fireworks looms in the air, I find myself standing in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol - not in body, but in spirit. Bathed in the glow of carefully curated lights, hangs an oil painting that has, for over two centuries, defined the image of a nation being born.

John Trumbull’s “Declaration of Independence” is more than just a painting; it is a moment suspended in the amber of America’s consciousness. But, what if we place red dots marking the faces of all the signatories who owned slaves? What narrative emerges when the curtain is drawn and the shadows lengthen across the painted canvas?

With the precision of a surgeon’s blade, these red dots lay open the contradiction of grand ideals and human frailty. Here, in this grand narrative, are men who dared to dream of a nation founded on liberty, even as they bound fellow human beings in chains. This stark duality is as much a part of the nation's legacy as the eloquent prose of the Declaration itself.

As I reflect on the flag,  the stars and stripes fluttering in the breeze, I am flush with a sea of emotions. A sense of gratitude, for the freedoms won, and yet a profound sorrow for the specters of the past that haunt the corners of this nation’s tapestry. What does it mean to be American, knowing the shadows that lurk in the corners of our history? What responsibilities befall us as the inheritors of both the light and the dark?

As the spark of cannons and fireworks celebrate the Fourth of July, the echoes of the past whisper through the ages. These whispers carry the cries of the enslaved yearning for freedom, the protests of the marginalized demanding a voice, and the quiet resolve of civil rights activists kneeling for equality. They converge into a haunting refrain: America’s symphony remains unfinished.

I ask myself, what hues do I add to this tapestry? What brushstrokes of action, empathy, and understanding can I contribute to America's unfinished canvas?

The specters of the past have not faded; they have evolved. The Supreme Court, which stands as a bedrock of America’s constitutional promises, has recently been a stage for these specters to dance. The red dots, as poignant as ever, reveal the scars of a nation still grappling with the incongruities of its birth.

As fireworks paint the skies this Fourth of July, let them be a reminder that America’s canvas is still wet with the paint of a story being written. It is a story etched with shadows, but it is in the interplay of light and darkness that the depth of a masterpiece is born.

So, as we, the stewards of this legacy, gather around the grills, and watch the sky light up let us also pause. Let us acknowledge the shadows, let the red dots be solemn reminders.

In this vast, unfathomable tapestry, each of us has a thread to weave. Let our choices, our voices, and our reflections this Fourth of July add to the resolute pursuit of a more perfect union.

I leave you with this: How will you wield your brush?
